Raina

The name Raina is from the French and means 'Queen' and that surely describes her life now in our family. But Raina's life was not always safe and full of love.

On July 12, 2006, someone (who was never caught) threw Raina from a moving vehicle, in the high speed lane of Route 3 South, Everett Turnpike in Nashua, New Hampshire, trying to kill her. It was pouring rain that afternoon when someone noticed, what they thought was a dead cat, against the Jersey barrier. When they realized the cat's head was up and saw it move, they knew it was still alive. That began the rescue to save this poor cat's life.

By the time people arrived on the scene, Raina had probably been huddled against the Jersey barrier for hours in the pelting rain. When we arrived, it was terrifying to watch the events unfolding. The cat was frozen in place, and speeding cars and trucks were passing within inches of her. If she moved, she would be killed. And there was nothing we could do to reach her, across four lanes of high speed traffic, until the police arrived.

When the State and Nashua police arrived and stopped traffic, we went into action, trying to rescue Raina. She did try and run from us and managed to make it to the side of the road, where she tried to hide in the flooding grassy areas. With the help of several people, we managed to get her and then rushed her to the local Animal Emergency Clinic.

At the ER, the vet examined Raina and did X-rays to see if she had suffered any internal injuries or had any broken bones. It was a miracle she did not have any internal damage or broken bones. But her feet ... the bottom pads of three of her feet were torn off. Her left front foot was the worse, but her right front and rear feet were bloody, open wounds. Only her left rear foot was uninjured. Given she was found in the high speed lane, her injuries were consistent with being thrown out of a moving vehicle. All we could imagine, was when she was thrown, in that split second before she hit the ground, she tried with all her strength to stop herself from rolling into traffic and being killed.

And then she just stayed where she landed, until we came along. I cannot imagine how anyone, could try and kill an animal. It's unfathomable to me. It is just an evil act and there is no excuse for it. And I cannot begin to comprehend what must have been going through Raina's mind that day, when a person who she had trusted tried to destroy her. Her pain, her fear, her sense of betrayal.

Raina stayed at the hospital for 5 days. We estimated she was only about 8 months old. It was during that stay, she was christened 'Raina' and began the start of a new life. I brought her home to foster on July 17, 2006 and was intending to find her a new home once she recovered. But Raina had other plans ... she was already home.

Raina stayed in quarantine in my house for months. We put thick soft blankets all on the floor because her foot pads were gone and she needed padding for her feet and body. She barely moved for 2 weeks. And then slowly, she started to take small steps. One by one, she learned to walk again on her feet. Amazingly, Raina did fully recover physically and mentally from her abuse. And she held no grudge against people. She was social and affectionate and wanted to interact with us.

Once she was well enough, I began to introduce her to the other furry members of our family. We slowly introduced to Raina to each dog, which she had no problem with. Then one-by-one we introduced her to our indoor cats. Raina was the young up-start and liked to pester a certain few of the other cats. She would lie in wait for them and then jump out to spook them. Or, she chased them around the house. Over the first few months, they all managed to settle in and get along better.

We discovered Raina likes 'fine dining' and thinks nothing of helping herself to what is on my plate. She likes to play 'hockey' and will cuff pens, kibble, mouse toys across the floor. Raina is also a great retriever and will chase, leap into the air and catch hair scrunchies and bring them back to me. And she is very vocal and will give you a piece of her mind, if she thinks you not attending to her every whim!

It has now been almost 2 1/2 years since Raina's horrible ordeal. They say "that which does not kill you, make you stronger" and it seems to be true. She is confident, independent, outgoing and lives life on her terms. She is also safe and loved and will be cared for forever. Long live Queen Raina.
