Maddy was born on Halloween 1999 and was the runt of a 10 puppy litter. She came to our home at 10 weeks and was happy, healthy and crazy - just like all puppies. In some ways she is a classic golden retriever: she loves all people and is wonderful with children, she loves to snuggle and is very compassionate and she is easy going and comfortable with other animals of all kinds. She is unusual in that she has always refused to shake (seems to think it is a dumb people trick), does not like the water or swimming and has no interest in 'retrieving' things. Last summer 2007, Maddy suffered a 'seizure' on two consecutive days which we later learned was actually two minor strokes. It took an MRI and many other tests at Tufts Veterinary Hospital to reach this diagnosis and no cause was ever found. She recovered completely within 48 hours - remarkable but true. This summer, in July 0f 2008, she had another more serious stroke which left her unable to move anything but her head and tail. Again we had her seen at both the Animal Hospital of Nashua and Tufts and again they confirmed her stroke diagnosis. Again, Maddy slowly regained her ability to walk and take care of her personal needs, and although her recovery was slower, within 4 weeks she was acting her age (almost 9) and running on the golf course. Her balance is not 100% nor is the strength in her rear legs, but she is home, happy and back with the 'pack'. She is now on a low dose aspirin regimen to try and prevent future stokes. We feel incredibly lucky to have her back and are enjoying every day as a gift. Maddie’s Mom Betsy |
